Bed bugs do not stay on the bed. During the day, many of them squeeze into the gap behind the skirting board, the space behind power point covers, cracks in timber floors and the joins where walls meet the ceiling. The crew we book uses a hand duster to puff a fine insecticidal dust into cracks, wall voids and fittings. With the power switched off at the board, they remove power point and light switch covers, apply a small amount of dust behind them, then refit the covers. Along the skirting, the dust goes into the gap between the board and the floor. Bed bugs that walk through the dust pick it up on their bodies, and because the dust stays put inside the wall, it keeps working on bugs that hatch or move later.
Dust is almost never used alone. It is part of a wider bed bug plan that includes steam or spray on the bed, frame and furniture. It suits older homes with timber floors and gappy skirting, and units where neighbours have also had bed bugs. The dust is placed in small amounts where people and pets will not touch it, and the crew will tell you which covers they opened so you can leave them alone afterwards.
